SHaC has been provided seed funding by the Ministry for the Environment’s Sustainable Management Fund.  Nine teams from tertiary institutes around the country are joining forces with local industry professionals and their communities to design and create a sustainable habitat.

Wellington’s entry, THE PLANT ROOM, is unique in that it deals with existing building stock - demonstrating how to convert an existing apartment building into a carbon neutral development.

Regenerative Architecture

Our regenerative habitat “THE PLANT ROOM” is an inner-city project that will generate energy, collect water, recycle waste and grow food whilst addressing urgent housing needs.

We intend to take an existing apartment within a social housing block in Wellington and transform it with a series of ‘clip-on’ systems.  These include living walls / living roof, rainwater collection, grey and black water processing, passive and active solar energy collection, wind power generation and edible gardens.

One of the main goals of this project is to communicate its ideas with the wider public. We will build two plant rooms. One unit will be mobile so that it can be exhibited at various locations in the Wellington region and reach the largest possible audience. The other will be built in-situ and used for ongoing monitoring and evaluation.

A Living Solution

The Plant Room system is designed so it can work individually and
en masse.  When applied together the Plant Room modules will take advantage of efficiencies of scale.

One plant room provides: Hot water for one person, 32% of their vegetable needs, an outdoor space and composting to reduce household waste by 50%.  It shades the apartment to avoid summer overheating and collects hot air to circulate warmth in winter.

How can you become involved?

We need to take THE PLANT ROOM to the next level.  Can you help us with services, materials, finance, transport, your time, a site or more?

We can offer you opportunities to:
•    Align with innovative research
•    Communicate with the community in a high visibility project
•    Demonstrate systems
•    Conduct product testing
•    Be exposed to national media
•    And much more …

We’d love to discuss how you could be involved over the next two years in nurturing this groundbreaking project.
